When I first joined the Mock Trial Club at St. Johnsbury Academy Jeju (SJA Jeju), I never imagined how much it would shape my high school years. What started as a curious step into the world of law and debate turned into one of the most defining experiences of my student life.

Leading the Mock Trial Club

Since January 2023, I have been part of the Mock Trial Club, and in my junior year, my teammates entrusted me with the role of Captain. Leading our team of around 10 passionate members (at times expanding to 15 during competition seasons) has been both a responsibility and a privilege.

Our weekly practices usually last 2 hours during the off-season, but in competition months, preparation can extend to 5 hours a day. This intensity is not just about learning rules of evidence or case details—it is about teamwork, critical thinking, and building persuasive strategies.

Competitions and Achievements

Over the past few years, I have competed in 8 Mock Trial competitions, both nationally and internationally. Each competition tested not only my public speaking but also my ability to think quickly, analyze details, and collaborate under pressure.

Some highlights include:

  • David Post Spirit Award at Empire Philadelphia 2024 – awarded to the most professional team
  • Best Witness Award at the Korean Mock Trial Association, Aug 2024
  • Outstanding Witness Award at the Korean Mock Trial Association, Aug 2024
  • Outstanding Witness Award at the Korean Mock Trial Association, March 2025

These recognitions represent more than just trophies; they reflect the hours of dedication, late-night practices, and the supportive bond within our team.

Skills I Gained Through Mock Trial

Through Mock Trial, I gained a deep understanding of legal procedures, due diligence, and witness examination. More importantly, I developed skills that go far beyond the courtroom:

  • Public Speaking – learning to present arguments clearly and persuasively.
  • Leadership – guiding teammates, balancing responsibilities, and motivating the group through stressful competitions.
  • Critical Thinking – analyzing cases from multiple angles and building strategies under time pressure.
  • Confidence – finding my voice and standing firmly in front of judges and peers.

Why Mock Trial Matters to Me

Mock Trial is more than just an extracurricular—it’s a community where I discovered my passion for law, debate, and teamwork. Being a captain has taught me not just how to lead, but how to listen, collaborate, and inspire.

As I look ahead, I know that these experiences will continue to influence my academic and career goals. Mock Trial at SJA Jeju has given me the confidence to pursue challenges and the perspective to understand the power of words, arguments, and teamwork.
